Playa Grande II is the second of two residences ACCOM has delivered in collaboration with New York–based Young Projects, on the wooded ridge above one of the Dominican Republic's most beautiful Atlantic beaches. The architectural premise was a sculpted, organically curved roof that lifts above the house's rectilinear plan, threading sightlines between mature trees rather than felling them.
Playa Grande II es la segunda de dos residencias que ACCOM ha entregado en colaboración con Young Projects de Nueva York, sobre la cresta boscosa que mira a una de las playas atlánticas más hermosas de la República Dominicana. La premisa arquitectónica fue un techo escultórico, de curvas orgánicas, que se eleva sobre la planta rectilínea de la casa hilando vistas entre los árboles maduros en lugar de talarlos.
Translating that geometry into buildable form was the work. Curved formwork, custom millwork from local hardwoods, and a structural system that resolves a complex roof onto only a handful of point loads — these had to be detailed, sourced, and executed by ACCOM's team and a roster of specialist subcontractors brought in from Santo Domingo.
Traducir esa geometría en forma construible fue el trabajo. Cimbra curva, ebanistería a la medida en maderas locales, y un sistema estructural que resuelve un techo complejo sobre apenas un puñado de cargas puntuales — todo ello tuvo que detallarse, suministrarse y ejecutarse por el equipo de ACCOM y un grupo de subcontratistas especializados traídos desde Santo Domingo.
The result is a 2,500 m² residence that feels neither imposed on its site nor diminished by it: trees grow through the plan, and the architecture seems, from above, to hover. Delivered over 36 months, on programme.
El resultado es una residencia de 2,500 m² que no se siente ni impuesta sobre su sitio ni disminuida por él: los árboles crecen a través de la planta, y la arquitectura parece, desde arriba, flotar. Entregada en 36 meses, dentro del cronograma.
